Why Telugu letters are so round తెలుగు అక్షరాలు ఎందుకు గుండ్రంగా ఉంటాయి?
For centuries, southern India wrote on dried palm leaves, scratching letters with a pointed metal stylus. A palm leaf has a grain, like wood. A straight horizontal stroke would split the leaf along that grain and ruin it.
So the scribes curved everything. Rounded strokes glide across the grain without tearing it — and over generations the scripts of the south, Telugu and Kannada among them, grew their distinctive loops and curls.
It's a lovely thought: the shape of the language was gently sculpted by the leaf it was written on. The next time you trace the curve of క or ఆ, you're following a line first drawn to protect a palm leaf.
