1. c. 1000 BCE Ancient roots

   ద్రావిడ మూలాలు

   Dravidian roots

   Telugu gradually separates from Proto-Dravidian, the ancestor it shares with Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Scholars place this split roughly between 1500 and 1000 BCE.

2. c. 200 BCE Ancient roots

   Earliest traces

   Individual Telugu words and place-names appear in Prakrit inscriptions of the Satavahana era — the oldest written traces of the language.

3. 575 CE First inscriptions

   తొలి తెలుగు శాసనం

   The first Telugu inscription

   The Renati Chola inscription at Kalamalla (today's Kadapa district) is the earliest known full inscription written in Telugu — the first time a royal proclamation was issued in the local tongue instead of Prakrit or Sanskrit.

4. 8th century First inscriptions

   Telugu writing spreads

   Under the Eastern Chalukyas and their successors, Telugu inscriptions multiply across the region, and the script steadily takes the rounded form we recognise today.

5. c. 1020–1060 CE Classical literature

   నన్నయ — ఆదికవి

   Nannaya, the Adi Kavi

   Nannaya of Rajamahendravaram begins translating the Mahabharata into Telugu in the elegant champu style. Honoured as the Adi Kavi (first poet), he marks the birth of Telugu literature.

6. 1205–1288 Classical literature

   తిక్కన

   Tikkana continues the epic

   During the Kakatiya golden age, Tikkana Somayaji carries the Andhra Mahabharatam forward, composing parvas 4 through 18 with extraordinary dramatic power.

7. 14th century Classical literature

   ఎర్రాప్రగడ · కవిత్రయం

   Errapragada and the Kavitrayam

   Errapragada completes the third parva and finishes the epic. Together, Nannaya, Tikkana and Errapragada are revered as the Kavitrayam — the Trinity of Poets who gave Telugu its literary foundation.

8. 1408–1503 Bhakti & Vijayanagara

   అన్నమాచార్యుడు

   Annamacharya's keertanas

   Tallapaka Annamacharya (Annamayya) composes tens of thousands of devotional keertanas to Lord Venkateswara at Tirupati — a fountainhead of Telugu song still sung today.

9. c. 1450–1510 Bhakti & Vijayanagara

   పోతన భాగవతం

   Pothana's Bhagavatam

   Bammera Pothana renders the Bhagavata Purana into mellifluous Telugu. The Pothana Bhagavatam remains one of the most beloved devotional works in the language.

10. 1509–1529 Bhakti & Vijayanagara

    శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయలు

    Krishnadevaraya's golden age

    Emperor Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara — himself author of Amuktamalyada — gathers the Ashtadiggajas, eight great poets, at his court. Telugu poetry reaches a dazzling peak.

11. 17th century Bhakti & Vijayanagara

    Vemana's verses for all

    Yogi Vemana writes blunt, witty four-line verses (the Vemana Satakam) in everyday Telugu — wisdom for ordinary people, memorised across generations.

12. 1848–1919 Modern renaissance

    కందుకూరి వీరేశలింగం

    Veeresalingam's renaissance

    Kandukuri Veeresalingam writes what is regarded as the first modern Telugu novel and leads a wave of social reform — the dawn of the Telugu Renaissance.

13. 1861–1915 Modern renaissance

    గురజాడ అప్పారావు

    Gurajada and modern Telugu

    Gurajada Apparao, father of modern Telugu literature, writes the landmark play Kanyasulkam (1892) and champions literature as a tool for social change.

14. 1863–1940 Modern renaissance

    గిడుగు రామమూర్తి

    Gidugu and the people's language

    Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy leads the movement for vyavaharika bhasha — living, spoken Telugu — over an archaic literary form. Telugu Language Day is celebrated on his birthday, 29 August.

15. 1953 Contemporary

    భాషా రాష్ట్రం

    A state for the language

    After Potti Sriramulu's fast unto death, Andhra State is formed in 1953 — the first Indian state created on a linguistic basis. Andhra Pradesh follows in 1956, uniting Telugu speakers.

16. 1970 Contemporary

    తొలి జ్ఞానపీఠం

    First Telugu Jnanpith

    Viswanatha Satyanarayana becomes the first Telugu writer to win the Jnanpith Award, for his epic Ramayana Kalpavruksham.

17. 2008 Contemporary

    ప్రాచీన భాష గుర్తింపు

    A Classical Language

    The Government of India recognises Telugu as a Classical Language, acknowledging more than 1,500 years of continuous literary heritage.

18. 2014 Contemporary

    రెండు తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాలు

    Two Telugu states

    Telangana is formed as a separate state alongside Andhra Pradesh, so Telugu is now the official language of two Indian states.

19. Today Contemporary

    ప్రపంచ భాష

    A global language

    About 96 million people speak Telugu in India and around 110 million worldwide — the 4th most-spoken language in India. It is also the fastest-growing language in the United States, more than tripling in under a decade.
